Satan is like a school yard bully looking for victims
I think of the movie “the Christmas story” where this kid is always being picked on by the neighborhood bully. Every time, he would walk down this ally, this bigger kid would jump out with one of his cronies and try to block him from getting somewhere and threaten with bodily harm.
Roaring Lion
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (I Peter 5:8)
I saw a documentary once on lions and found it very interesting. In this documentary it went on to say that one way that lions would kill their pray was to do this. They would roar loudly and the hyena would hear it and be consumed with fear-and this sounded unbelievable to me, but they would then have a heart attack and just die. The lion would then go and have a snack with virtually no energy expended. Its victim just lay down.
Remember bullies are by nature intimidators and don’t really want to fight you. They want that lazy lunch: just to roar and hope you will surrender. Many do!
Is that what we do?
Let me say this not all sickness is a direct attack from the devil. We do live in a fallen world and our bodies our comprised do to this. Well maybe in this sense all sickness is from the devil. He tempted man in the Garden of Eden and when mankind surrendered his rights to the devil he then won the rights to attack man. Jesus came 2000 years ago and won our rights back-that is if we take them.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
Now do we do that?
What does that mean in practical terms?
One thing I know is that to resist isn’t just a one time thing- the word here really means to resist and keep resisting.
Take the Word of God which is Alive and use it to Defeat the Devil
“ For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
The question is do we really in our heart of hearts believe that the Word of God is alive?
We have to mediate on God’s promises-chew on them and swallow them and then recall them as needed and they will become alive in our hearts. To do that we must first believe that they are more than words on a page and they are not for just the super spiritual. These promises are for you. That’s right you. God wrote them with you in mind. They will become real to us and begin to effectively start working in us.
“Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all”(I Timothy 4:15)
Remember if it isn’t an instant victory look at it as a building project that you will complete (Sometimes it’s a sprint, sometimes a marathon-but if you remain diligent-don’t quit you will win the race)
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”(Galatians 6:9)
Keep standing on the promises and believing and it will happen-just don’t quit and you will get it.
